5 Surprising Benefits of Eating Fruit in the Morning

There are many myths and misconceptions in fitness circles regarding fruit. Not only do some people think that fruit should be only eaten on an empty stomach because otherwise, it will rot or ferment in the stomach, but some people think that you should never eat the fruit in the morning, but only in the afternoon.

That’s a lot of nonsense and I’m here to show you that there are many benefits to eating fruits in the morning. Here are 5 benefits that top all of them.

The 5 best benefits of eating fruits in the morning are:

  • It boosts immunity
  • Helps to detox
  • Gives you a vitamin shot
  • Reduces bloating
  • It boosts metabolism

Let’s take a closer look at all these benefits individually to get a better understanding.

1. It Boosts the Immune System

If there’s a benefit that’s the most, well beneficial, in these unprecedented times of COVID-19, it must be that fruits, and especially citrus fruits, boost our immune system.

Any fruit that has a high content of vitamin C should be included on the breakfast menu. Posterchild of vitamin C, lemon is not something that a lot of people eat, especially in the morning. And if we want to get the best results, we need to eat whole fruit, not just the juice.

The pulp is where the good stuff lies, but also the peel. Of course, you’re not going to eat an orange unpeeled, but in the case of an apple or pear, there’s no need to peel it. Or simply toss it into a blender.

I prefer to eat half a grapefruit, some blueberries, and a few slices or cubes of mango. But there are no wrong answers here as almost all fruit is great for you and your immunity.

People that include fruits and vegetables as part of a healthy diet have a decreased risk of some chronic diseases as well.

2. Helps to Detox

If you don’t know what detoxing is, it’s basically a process of removing toxic waste substances from your body. Fresh fruit and fruit juice can help you detox every morning if you include them in your diet.

Fruits are rich in fiber, minerals, and antioxidants among other useful things, and are a natural aid in detoxing our bodies. For best results, choose pineapples, oranges, grapefruit, and tomatoes.

Pineapple is rich in bromelain that has been used for centuries to treat diseases, primarily throughout Central and South America. It can help break down proteins and help with digestion. Canned pineapple doesn’t have a lot of bromelain so please just eat a fresh one as it tastes better as well. I won’t even make fun of you for putting it on pizza if that’s what it takes!

Tomatoes are technically a fruit and they’re full of antioxidants and are essential for the detox process. A hearty tomato soup often called detox soup, might not be everyone’s cup of tea soup in the morning, but it can be eaten hot or cold. I like to drink it. It’s an acquired taste, and I wasn’t a big fan at first, but now I’ve warmed up to it.

3. Gives You a Shot of Vitamins

Even kids know that fruit has a plethora of vitamins, but some of us only start eating fruit when we’re already down with a cold for example. We’re squeezing our lemons and eating oranges. I’m not saying that people shouldn’t eat fruit when they’re sick but how hard can it be to eat a few pieces of tasty fruit every day? It’s not like it tastes bad or is inconvenient.

Maybe a solution could be to hide small pieces of fruits in hamburgers and pizza like you would hide it from a kid, or when you’d wrap your dog’s tablet inside a sausage or something.

I’m getting a bit off tangent here, but the point is that fruit has a lot of benefits when you eat it any time of day, but especially in the morning. Your body needs liquids and it’s great to get some vitamins in there as well.

According to Healthline, the five most healthy fruits are:

  1. Grapefruit
  2. Pineapple
  3. Avocado
  4. Blueberries
  5. Apple

There is some truth that not all fruits are created equal and that some are better than others, but if you eat a varied diet and include varied fruits into that diet, you’re basically bulletproof.

4. Reduces Bloating

Although some fruits, like apples, can cause some temporary bloating feeling, long-term, eating lots of fruits will help you reduce bloating as they’ll flush out your digestive system.

Water dense fruits like watermelons will flush out any excess sodium out of your gut while fruits high in potassium, like bananas, work to prevent water retention.

Water-rich fruits are:

  1. Watermelon
  2. Strawberries
  3. Cantaloupe
  4. Peaches
  5. Oranges

Potassium-rich fruits are:

  1. Bananas
  2. Oranges
  3. Cantaloupe
  4. Apricots
  5. Grapefruit

Papaya has a special enzyme called papain, which helps break down proteins in your gastrointestinal system, which makes digesting easier.

5. It Boosts Metabolism

This is the most exciting benefit of eating fruits in the morning! If you want to boost your metabolism and lose some weight or excess fat, eating fruit for breakfast is a great start. Skipping breakfast can and often will slow down your body’s fat burning ability as it will try to conserve energy thinking that there’s no food available.

Yup, turns out that our bodies, and minds, are still slaves to old habits when we were hunters and gatherers and there wasn’t always food readily available. Our bodies learned and adapted to periods of food scarcity by slowing down the metabolic rate to a standstill.

What helped us survive before and thrive as human beings, now hinders our modern efforts to lose weight or fat in a world of abundance.

Fruits like melons, apples, berries, and citrus fruits are natural metabolism boosters. As I already mentioned, it is best to eat the whole fruit and nothing but the fruit (sorry, I had to) rather than juice the fruit. Juicing leaves all the sugars while at the same time leaving out the fiber.

I hope that I shed some light on common misconceptions involving fruits as morning food. No need to get rid of that sausage egg, but I do hope you’ll start to enjoy some of these benefits of eating fruits in the morning!
