7 Lowest Calorie Fruits of 2022

Fruit is a naturally sweet and delicious snack and is the perfect companion when trying to lose some additional pounds. I have also found it’s the perfect alternative for those late sweet tooth cravings  Fruits are packed with healthy vitamins, nutrients, and fiber to help support a healthy diet.

Depending on your calorie goals and needs, you should make note of which fruits are the best to eat for your goals! So here is my list of the top 7 lowest calorie fruits you should be eating in 2022 for weight loss!

grapefruit is one of the lowest calorie fruits

When I was a kid in the nineties, I remember my mom eating a grapefruit a day when she was going through her dieting phase. Now I see why, it contains just 39 calories. Which is pretty amazing, they are a good size! Just make sure you can get over the bitter taste.

Other health benefits? One grapefruit contains 65% of the daily recommended Vitamin C intake and ranks very low on the Glycemic Index, meaning it’s the perfect treat for someone with diabetes. The sugar from the fruit will be slowly released into the bloodstream as opposed to an insulin spike raising blood sugar levels.

This is what makes the grapefruit the perfect low calorie fruit for weight loss.

2. Apples

Apples are next on the list at 116 calories and a whopping 5.4 grams of fibre. Like the grapefruit, this low calorie fruit also has a slow effect on sugar reaching the bloodstream.

Studies show that, an apple a day not only keep doctors away, but also aids in weight loss and maintaining your weight after it’s gone.

The high fibre content makes apples very filling and should satisfy you hunger wise until your next meal. So in a way, eating an apple can help prevent you from overeating!

Apples are best eaten with the peel on, there’s where you’re going to get the best value nutrient wise!

You can also boil an apple and add it to your breakfast cereal for a sweet treat!

3. Berries

I remember going camping as a kid in the late summer. My parents and I would go on hike and look for the blueberry and blackberry bushes and pick all of them! It’s definitely a great past time memory.

One thing I didn’t know then but know now are that berries are very low in calories! A half a cup of blueberries contains 42 calories, but it also has very high amounts of Vitamin C.

Blackberries contain about 62 calories and taste great plain or added to oatmeal!

A cup of strawberries contain less than 50 calories, and are quite filling, and in my opinions is an ideal fruit to eat, if you become hungry mid-morning or afternoon.

4.Stone Fruits

Stone fruits are seasonal and contain a pit inside. Examples include the peach, nectarine, apricot, or cherries! They are all very low in calories, have a low glycemic indix, and are rich in Vitamins C and A, making them perfect for weight loss.

Four apricots contain about 60 calories and 1 cup of cherries contains 80-90 calories, making them amongst the lowest calorie fruits, next to the grapefruit. Remember that they are seasonal fruits and not available all year-round. So when you can get them, make the most of them as a snack.

5.Passion Fruit

Passion fruit grows on a vine, and is easy to grow over your fence, in your own backyard provided you live in a warm sunny environment.

The pulp inside the fruit is sweet and edible, and the good news is that a passion fruit contains only 17 calories, and is rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Potassium. It also contains a high amount of fiber!

Passion Fruit can make a great side to some breakfast greekyogurt, however you will require two or three due to their smal size. The fiber slows down digestion and will keep you feeling fuller for longer. If you have a supply of passionfruit they are great as a companion to strawberries for dessert and the good thing is the whole desert is under 100 calories.

Technically a vegetable, but often thought of as a fruit, the rhubarb can make another great addition to your summer garden.

It contains a high amount of fiber and requires cooking before eating. There is also some evidence to suggest Rhubarbs help lower cholesterol

If you do grow rhubarb, don’t eat the leaves as they are poisonous with the high levels of oxalic acid. Cook the rhubarb stalks in a small amount of boiling water, add a small amount of sugar free orange juice to sweeten. It’s another good fruit to add to your breakfast cereal, containing around 11 calories per stalk and 1 gram of fiber.

Melons are low in calories and high in water content. Absolutely perfect for cooling off on hot Summer days.

Honeydew and watermelon are easy to find and contain about 45 calories per cup. They also contain a lot of fiber making them quite filling. If you cut the melon up and leave it in the fridge it is both sustaining and thirst-quenching and something the whole family will eat. It is easily blended into smoothies to give to the children as an alternative to cola or juice.

Make a fruit salad with berries and melon, a great hot weather combination of the lowest calorie fruits.

Once you start eating more fruit you’ll slowly begin to see the importance of focusing on overall health and the weight will just naturally come off.  It’s important to take the focus off dieting and start to eat nourishing foods. Just stay focused, choose some of the above fruits, and the extra weight will be coming off in no time!
